MGPI (Maori Genuine Progress Indicator) - By Māori, for Māori

The standard GPI (Genuine Progress Indicator) accounting framework is used by countries to measure well-being based on economic, environmental, and social quality of life to quantify progress.  However, as the standard GPI model combines all indicators together, it lacks actual indigenous markers and values for measuring indigenous wellbeing.

MBIE has funded the introduction of MGPI Accounting (Maori Genuine Progress Indicator accounting) in Heretaunga and Tamatea over the next 2 years.  The project is the first regionally in New Zealand of MGPI accounting, and the first three tauira intakes began in October 2020.

Academic leadership is being provided by Dr Anthony Cole (Ngāti Koroki/Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga) who for the last 13 years has led the development of MGPI accounting in New Zealand and international development of indigenous transdisciplinary research.

There are 20 tauira from various marae currently on the MGPI course, the majority doing a 6-month version.  A handful of tauira are doing the 12-mth course due to work constraints.  Multi-media course content covers wellbeing knowledge and context from ancient indigeneous cultures to cultural survival for Maori today.  Content is available online for self study then workshopped one day per month in person with Dr Cole.

‘Creative Activity’ takes shape in the second half of the course as tauira move from ‘knowing’ to ‘doing’.  Creative Activity is a description for marae, hapu, hapori-led hauoranga research, enterprise and innovation based on their own well-being indicators, whatever they may be.  Already many of the tauira are experiencing potential activities that will increase knowledge and wellbeing in their community.

INTERESTED IN PARTICIPATING OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO WOULD BE?

If you are committed, prepared to give back to your marae, hapu, and/or hapori and can make the time to engage in this learning/activity from 6mths to 1yr, we are preparing to start a new intake of tauira in March 2021 and we invite all marae to inform their whanau / hapu of this unique opportunity.

  • The course is free, takes a few hours a week of self-study, one day per month at workshop.
  • All workshops are at Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga and are catered.
  • Once in a roopu your monthly workshop day is set & will be on the same day each month – so you can organise your work/ calendar to attend.
  • NB: All roopu workshops run on consecutive days in the second week each month
  • Dr Cole is available to mentor and assist between workshops (email & cell), Te Manaaki Taiao can assist with any other questions
  • There is some flexibility - if you are unable to make it in person on a given day/month , you can zoom in or you can attend another roopu workshop.
  • There is an initial induction/ introductory workshop for all new tauira and registration for the course – you are under no obligation to do the course if it is not for you.
  • We will receive names of interested people from now - contact us to register your interest
