The Directorate was established in February 2021 
comprising the existing Customary Fisheries Team 
and a new Treaty Analysis and Capability team. 
The purpose of the Directorate is to better enable Fisheries 
New Zealand to deliver on its Treaty partnership and 
Treaty settlement obligations by:
• leading and supporting relationships and engagements 
with tangata whenua and iwi, including through 
oversight of the Iwi Fisheries Forums,
• providing Treaty analysis and advice, including Treaty 
settlements and protocols,
• building our capability to engage with Treaty partners 
and Māori, ensuring we deliver on our Treaty 
settlement obligations, and collaborating on Māori 
economic development issues and opportunities.
