Healthy Active Learning is a joint initiative between the Ministries of Health and Education and Sport NZ. Sport Hawke’s Bay will providing the physical activity workforce for the Hawke’s Bay region kicking off in January 2022. They are looking for someone to work with the schools and kura in Wairoa. They have recently met with the Principals Association in Wairoa and this was received well with a lot of interest to get started in the New Year. They have employed 2 other Healthy Active Learning Advisors also that will be working with the CHB, Napier and Hastings Schools and kura and now are hoping to fill the Wairoa position.

Sport Hawke’s Bay exists to enhance the health and wellbeing of Hawke’s Bay by influencing, enabling, and supporting our communities to be more physically active.
The Role
Healthy Active Learning is a joint government initiative between Sport New Zealand and the Ministries of Health and Education to improve the wellbeing of children and young people through healthy eating, drinking and quality physical activity.
The initiative is part of the Government’s Child, Youth and Wellbeing Strategy and has three components:
- New Health and Physical Education and Hauora (HPE) curriculum resources (Ministry of Education).
- Toolkits and a health promotion workforce to support adoption and implementation of healthy food and water-only policies (Ministry of Health).
- A physical activity workforce (Sport NZ).
Regional Sports Trusts will partner with Sport New Zealand to employ the physical activity workforce that will work with approximately 800 primary and intermediate schools and kura.
The physical activity workforce will work with tamariki (5-11 year olds), with the following expected outcomes:
- Tamariki are supported to make positive and informed choices about food, nutrition and physical activity.
- Tamariki are supported to develop critical perspectives about food, nutrition and physical activity.
- Tamariki are actively and positively engaged in learning.
- School and kura cultures, environments and processes value and prioritise quality physical activity and nutrition that meets students’ needs.
- Schools, kura and communities provide access to healthy food and quality physical activity.
- The Healthy Active Learning Advisors’ will work with Boards of Trustees, principals, senior leaders and teachers of primary and intermediate schools and kura to provide advice and customised support. This will enable schools to strategize, plan and develop systems that contribute to the development of an active and healthy school culture
The Healthy Active Learning Advisors will support school leaders and teachers to better plan and implement the Health and Physical Education and Hauora curriculum (HPE), identify and develop opportunities for quality physical activity experiences for tamariki (in school and in the community), and advise on how to establish healthy behaviours and environments through supporting the adoption and implementation of healthy food and water-only policies.
Developing and maintaining strong meaningful relationships with schools and kura principals, senior leaders and teachers is a critical component of this role.
Key Accountabilities
As the Healthy Active Learning Advisor, you will:
- Develop and nurture relationships with schools and kura and the wider community
- Engage and work with the Boards of Trustees, principals and senior leadership teams of the selected schools and kura to connect Healthy Active Learning to schools’ values, achievement challenges and strategic educational outcomes
- Be passionate about working collectively to enable change that positively impacts the students and their communities
- Ensure the philosophies and principles underpinning Healthy Active Learning are applied, including Sport New Zealand’s insights, physical literacy and locally led approaches
- Provide relevant and up to date Health and PE curriculum knowledge as well as supporting teachers with planning, teaching and assessment strategies that support students’ engagement and achievement
- Utilise and deploy Health Physical Education resources available when and where appropriate to support quality planning and delivery
- Maintain a good working relationship with the Public Health Unit Healthy Active Learning health promoter, seek advice from, and link the health promoters with their schools/kura where there are specific nutrition/food questions or issues that require nutrition expertise
- Work with the school and kura communities (staff, students and parents/caregivers) to encourage, support and enable healthy eating and water-only policies and environments, including integrating healthy eating and water-only messages into Health and PE teaching where appropriate, and model appropriate behaviours when on school/kura premises
- Understand and promote the value of physical activity for the holistic wellbeing of tamariki
- Support schools to identify how to enhance and support school, teachers’ and students’ wellbeing through physical activity
- Commit to the Healthy Active Learning evaluation plan, through supporting the implementation of agreed evaluation processes
- Ensure all decisions and behaviours are inclusive and embrace diversity across the wider school and kura community, through commitment to social justice, equity and equality
- Ensure the Treaty of Waitangi and its principles of Partnership, Protection and Participation are acknowledged and reflected in the implementation of the initiative
- Mitigate and openly communicate any possible risks or incidents that have the potential to bring a Regional Sports Trust, Sport New Zealand and/or invested partners into disrepute.
Essential Skills
- Knowledge of the education, sport, active recreation and play sectors across Aotearoa
- Understanding of how the social determinants of health impact on access, opportunities and decisions that tamariki make regarding their own wellbeing
- Exceptional relationship building skills, accompanied by a high level of emotional and social intelligence
- Knowledge and understanding of effective pedagogical strategies, in particular, culturally responsive and active pedagogies
- Experience in planning, managing, and prioritising multiple and competing tasks and projects to meet deadlines and produce quality results
- A high level of verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage and communicate effectively to a wide range of stakeholders and audiences
- Knowledge of, and commitment to, the Treaty of Waitangi.
Specifically:
- Hold a relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience in the education and/or health sector
- Experience working with schools and/or kura
- Experience in positively influencing attitudes, behaviours and processes
- Knowledge and understanding of the operating models in primary and intermediate schools and/or kura
- Knowledge and understanding of the New Zealand Curriculum and/or Te Marautanga o Aotearoa
Knowledge of the Health and Physical Education Curriculum with practical delivery experience
HEALTHY ACTIVE LEARNING ADVISOR
Healthy Active Learning is a joint government initiative between Sport New Zealand and the Ministries of Health and Education to improve the wellbeing of tamariki through healthy eating and drinking, and quality physical activity. We are on the lookout for a Healthy Active Learning Advisor to join our Wairoa team from January 2022.
In January 2022, Healthy Active Learning will be expanded to support over 800 schools, kura and their local communities across New Zealand and we are looking for a capable and passionate person to join the national network of Healthy Active Learning Advisors.
This role is a full time position although we will consider applications from those who would be interested in a job share or part-time hours.
Working alongside school leaders, teachers, and local communities, you will be integral to contributing to the development of healthy and active schools and kura environments.
