Kahungunu ki Wairarapa Covid 19 Pānui

Kahungunu ki Wairarapa Covid 19 Pānui

Panui ki te iwi
Kia Ora Tatou e te Iwi o te Mana Whenua o Wairarapa
He Karere Whakahou…

It has been just over a week since our last pānui and a lot has happened in that time. We are now 3 weeks into the COVID-19 Alert Level 4. It’s encouraging to know that Wairarapa has the highest level of testing per capita for the COVID-19 virus in the country and to date there has been no new cases of the virus reported for the Wairarapa since the 2nd of April. The result of whanau being responsible and following the local and national guidelines. However, we must remain vigilant to ensure our whānau are safe and protected.

Health and Wellbeing

These extra-ordinary times will be affecting the health of many of our whānau, both mentally and physically. It’s important to remind ourselves that it’s alright to not be okay all the time. It’s also important to know that if we’re not feeling well, there are things we can do to strengthen our ‘taha hinengaro’ mental wellbeing and our ‘hauora tinana’ physical health. Our whānau are always there for each other. We also encourage whānau to access our Maori Health providers for advice and assistance should it be required.

Tihei Mauri Ora Community Champions

Whānau throughout Wairarapa have periodically been visited by various organisations delivering Care Packages. Those various packages are made up of health items, personal hygiene products and kai.

Kahungunu ki Wairarapa have a collective of ‘Tihei Mauri Ora Community Champions’ strategically located around our rohe distributing these packages to whanau.

One of our whānaunga is leading the Tihei Champions. He and the other Community Champions must be acknowledged for volunteering their personal time and resources, to ensure our people’s fundamental needs are being attended to. Not to mention the risks around the health and safety of all their immediate families.

The Māori Easter Bunny

Who knew the Bunny was Māori

Hayden Hape, The Chairperson of ‘Kahungunu Ki Tamaki Nui a Rua’, sourced a supply of Easter Eggs that was allocated to all our Kahungunu Taiwhenua. Wairarapa included.

We are wholeheartedly grateful and acknowledge the commitment and dedication the Tihei Champions and Hayden Hape (The Easter Bunny) have demonstrated for our people.

We will continue to deliver Kai to whānau when stocks are replenished and support our other collaborative partners/agencies during this difficult period.

Kahungunu ki Wairarapa recognises that we have not been able to reach all our whānau during this lockdown phase. We have every desire to achieve this, however…limited resources inevitably prevents us touching every corner of the Wairarapa. Unfortunately someone is always going to miss out…and for that reason alone…we apologise…

Heoi…e oku kaumatua pakeke…me oku whānaunga…

Kia ora mai ra ki a tatou katoa

Mauri Ora!
