The Opportunity Te Tūranga
One of the key areas of focus for the Council is strengthening the relationships with Napier City Council, Tangata Whenua and Ahuriri Mana Whenua.

We have two positions for the following role of Te Kaiwhakahaere Hononga Māori - Māori Partnership Manager. This position will report directly to the Pou Whakarae - Director of Māori Partnership.

In this role, you will be responsible for the day to day support of Te Waka Rangapū, working with the Pou Whakarae for all Council requirements. This includes strategic and policy direction, relevant legislation. A significant part of this position will be to ensure Council is continuously aware of any issues of interest and concern to our Māori community and is positioned to proactively and appropriately respond to these as they arise.

In addition, Te Kaiwhakahaere Hononga Māori - Māori Partnership Manager is responsible for performing a number of functions, including:

  • Te whakakaha i ngā hononga o Te Kaunihera ā-Rohe o Ahuriri me te mana whenua o Ahuriri i raro i Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • Te tautoko i te Pou Whakarae mō ngā hononga Kāwana me te Komiti Māori o te Kaunihera.
  • Te mahi tahi me ngā tari o Te Kaunihera kia whai wāhi ai te tirohanga Māori ki ā mātou ratonga mā te hapori.
  • Te hanga ara e hono ai, ā, e whai wāhi hoki ai te hapori Māori ki ā te Kaunihera whakamaheretanga.
  • Te hāpai i te āheitanga ahurea o ā te Kaunihera whakahaeretanga katoa ki te mahitahi me te mana whenua, ā, ki te tūhono anō hoki ki te hapori Māori.
  • Te whakatairanga i ngā tikanga Māori ki te taone o Ahuriri me te whakamana i tā te mana whenua whakatinana i ā rātau tikanga.
  • To strengthen relationships with Napier City Council and Ahuriri Mana Whenua underpinned by Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • Supporting the Pou Whakarae in regards to Governance relationships with Council's Māori Committee;
  • Working closely with Council departments to bring a Māori lens of our services to our Community
  • Creating pathways for the Māori Community to engage and participate in Council planning
  • Uplifting the Council's operations' collective cultural capability to partner with Mana Whenua appropriately and engage with Hapori Māori.
  • Promote Tikanga Māori to Napier City and enable Mana Whenua to exercise their cultural values.

This role requires you to demonstrate a proven ability to navigate and strengthen Māori and iwi relationships successfully. You need to have the capability to work confidently in an integrated manner and be a problem solver who can make things happen while balancing the need to build and maintain strong affiliations in a challenging political and cultural environment.

Be driven to achieve results, be an effective relationship builder, and have strong analytical and communication skills in Te Reo and English. Have proven experience in developing and fostering relationships across diverse audiences, including stakeholders and elected members within the organisation.
