Ngāti Kahungunu has been part of the group of claimants from the start of the WAI 262 claim to today and is now asking for marae hapū whanau input into supporting the progress of the claim through the parliamentary process towards settlement.
In Heretaunga, Lead counsel for the claim Leo Watson attended the September monthly hui of the collective Heretaunga marae and mana whenua roopu, Te Rūnanganui o Heretaunga, to outline the steps through the process and to offer a series of further presentations and hui in coming weeks within Heretaunga.
Te Rūnanganui o Heretaunga agreed to the formation of a working group from the collective to assist in the roll-out of hui, the provision of focussed feedback to Lead Counsel, and uphold Heretaungatanga with collective Rūnanganui sign-off.
The following was made available to Te Rūnanganui o Heretaunga as background for the future hui.
